Normal
Love, Marriage, Family, Sex, Change.
Roy and Irma are a devoted couple, living in rural Illinois when, at a party celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, Roy inexplicably blacks out. As he awakens, it is with the realization that his life must change forever. Roy confesses to Irma that he's a woman trapped in a man's body and that he wants a sex change.
What comes as a surprise to his wife sends shock waves throughout their small churchgoing community. Roy must face their friends, his coworkers and his own children with the whole new way of life he has planned - and they must face him.
What happens to a town, a factory and a loving marriage when confronted with such a transformation is all about being who you are, being in love and simply being normal.

Stunning Performances from Lange and Wilkinson - eoguy
This is an HBO original movie about a man who decides to become a woman after 25 years of marriage. We are given relatively little about the man (bravely and respectfully played by Tom Wilkinson) beyond what we observe on the surface. He is a good man making a rapid and drastic change in a very unforgiving midwest town. The true revelation is Jessica Lange as his wife. By virute of the honesty and intelligence of her performance, we are privvy to the entire range of a loving and supportive wife's reaction to the devastating news that her husband has chosen sex reassignment surgery. We see disbelief, anger, rejection, and finally acceptance. This could have been sentimental mush (it veers close with the daughter's impossibly glib acceptance), but Lange singlehandedly floats the movie with perfectly-timed flashes of bitterness, irony, humor, and compassion. Why, oh why, don't we see more of this brilliant actress?
