Novocaine
Getting to the root of the problem is like pulling teeth...
Dr. Frank Sangster (Steve Martin) is a straight-laced dentist who, because of one innocent lie, finds his tidy, prosperous life transformed into a comic quagmire of illicit sex, illegal drugs and inexplicable murder in this brilliantly offbeat, bitingly comedic film!

The twists and turns of the story, plus the great cast, very much save this film's weak direction - moviemonger
'Novocaine' has a fine cast and is based on an interesting concept, although it doesn't always come off. This is David Atkins' first feature as director and it shows. The cast are all outstanding but are clearly in need of stronger direction. While the plot has plenty of potential, the story needs to be told in a much sharper and more coherent way. The good use of 'gimmicky' visuals doesn't make up for the fact that inadequate attention has been paid to basic production values. The entertaining Steve Martin narration is in bits and pieces and would have been much better if continued throughout or done away with altogether – preferably the former. A film noir without the noir, the story lies as flat and cold as a two-day-old corpse at the morgue. It does provide some small pleasures. There is Steve Martin's always reliable and intriguing acting, but that's about it.It kept me interested... - aBrickInTheWall
I didn't think it was that predictable. I thought Steve Martin did a good job of this serious role, making me empathetic towards his predicament and spiralling troubles. I did not see the twists coming a mile away, especially at the end. I was just glad he finally made a smart move...Steve Martin FAIL - RocksandChairs
I found this movie extremely predictable. There were a lot of twists and turns but I saw them all coming. Helena Bonham Carter as always is good at playing a dark character but she's not exactly hot so her role as the hot chick that Steve Martin wants to do doesn't work the way it should. For once I'd love to see a movie with dentists in it where they DON'T switch teeth on a dead body and burn it. But as always when a movie involves a dentist there's often sex in a dentist chair and teeth switching. This movie had both and I saw them both coming a mile away. Spend your money elsewhere!
