Othello
An Explosive 21st Century Adaptation From Masterpiece Theatre
A powerful black man in a white society. Acclaimed screenwriter Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones's Diary, Pride and Prejudice) takes these themes from Shakespeare and reworks them into an achingly intense contemporary story set in present-day London. As racial tensions threaten to explode, political forces propel John Othello (Eamonn Walker, Unbreakable, Oz) into a high-profile public role over the head of his best friend and mentor Ben Jago (Christopher Eccleston, Elizabeth, The Others). Seething with jealousy, Jago maintains a façade as the loyal confidant while seizing on Othello's obsessive love for his beautiful wife, Dessie (Keeley Hawes, Wives and Daughters), as the path to his destruction.

I wasn't sure what to expect, never having enjoyed "updated classics" before - but I give this movie 5 stars. Excellent acting ... amazing that a story written over 400 years ago can be so fresh and relevant today.
This is definitely a must-watch - even held my husband's interest!!!!
Highly recommended.What a surprise!! - Pat1
Absolutely fantastic rethinking of Othello. Geez that Bard guy was smart. He left lots of food for thought with his work. Othello is about race and love and sex and politics and this modern version is about the same stuff placed in a highly appropriate modern setting.Excellent! - heatherc
This is a fantastic adaptation of Othello. I recommend watching the Shakespearean versinon first, and then seeingthis. The comparison between the two is quite fascinating!
Keeley Hawes does an incredible job, and Eammon Walker is a convincing Othello. It took a while to sink into the story, but it's pretty enjoyable. Well worth the rental!
