Paradox, Detached, Cold, Analytical - moviemonger
The plot goes back and forth through time, but it is never confusing, and never gets in the way of the interesting crime-ridden plot line. The characters are real, or at least feel real, and the developing relationship between the two leading antagonistic characters is well-done and believable. Soderbergh's shooting style is slick, and reminiscent of some of the best '70's exploitation movies, as well as the soundtrack which comes through like the era left behind, but the sounds not forgotten. All of the stars are great in their roles, with exceptional marks to Clooney.Out of Sight - ABC99
This is still my favorite on screen couple in movie history. Out of Sight is where George Clooney confirmed himself as a leading man and Jennifer Lopez fooled us into thinking she was a leading lady. The two stars ooze charisma as a couple on opposite sides of the law. Sparks fly whenever they are on screen together and watch for the great scene in the revolving restaurant when they finally meet up. A great love scene ensues. Their is also a great supporting cast and the direction sings keeping the audience on its toes while it shifts locations and timelines.Great Characters and Great Ensemble Cast - Gregg
Likable bank robber (George Clooney) escapes prison with the aid of a former partner in crime who has an overworked conscience (Ving Rhames) but runs across a Federal Marshall (Jennifer Lopez) whom he quickly falls for and vice versa despite the obvious compatibility issue. In the meantime a big heist is planned involving some fellow inmates both as perpetrator (Don Cheadle) and victim (Albert Brooks).
The trailers seemed to paint this as far more of an action flick than it really is, what is more than anything else is a character study that is also a caper film with both romance and action elements. The actual plot is secondary to the characters for the most part and that’s fine. There seems to be no end to the charisma of the performers here, Clooney does quite a respectable job as a smooth bank robber while Lopez shines as the Federal Marshall who can’t seem to decide wht to do. As for the supporting players, I rarely if ever dislike anything done by Ving Rhames and everyone else (which includes Cheadle, Brooks, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton, Nancy Allen, Catherine Keener, Dennis Farina, Luis Guzman, Steven Zahn) turns in a good performance in some very small roles.
The film is directed by Steven Soderberg (Traffic, Erin Brockovich) and based on a novel by Elmore Leonard.
Above all else the characters, along with some great scenes and a very, very good ensemble cast make this a worthwhile if not outstanding film.
