It is so nice to see Sean Connery in a romance, although part of me still expect him to say, "My name is Bond, James Bond."
The wonderful cast make this story both funny and moving. The seemingly seperate lives of the characters tie together nicely at the very end of the film.
A wonderfully refreshing look at love and romance, at any age.No Film for Young Cynics - Stitch
But just the ticket for old romantics (like me) who appreciate the likes of Notting Hill. Here we have a strong cast who treat their plot segments as labors of love. The resolution is as unbelievable as it is affirmative…but who’s to quibble about credibility when we’re out to be entertained.
Among a number of fine performances, the most notable is Angelina Jolie. Agreed I have been a long time fan since I first fell in love with ‘the little black dress’ opposite Denzel Washington in The Bone Collector (1999). But here she covers the whole range from ditzy club hopper to vulnerable woman starved for affection and is convincing throughout. And her partner Ryan Phillippe gets a thumbs up for aiding and abetting; his slow progression to acceptance is appropriate contrast and equally believable. Good casting choices and nice work from both of them.
The seniors Connery and Rowlands benefit from some excellent dialogue around a situation simple in concept but compelling in its sincerity. It’s an unusually intelligent scenario; kudos to the writer and director Willard Carroll. The same cannot be said for the Stowe/Edwards episodes; they neither fit nor are they convincing. But Burstyn as the grieving mother ably compensates; unlike other reviewers, I thought this segment added some necessary gravity. Yes, it’s a nod to pathos and hence audience sympathy, but the subject is handled with sensitivity and rounds out the examination of love extant throughout.
Dennis Quaid cannot be ignored, if only because his segments add a little mystery to the mélange. I’ve never been a big fan but he’s competent here doing a diverse and not particularly likeable character. Gillian Anderson’s talents are unfortunately not challenged in arguably the weakest of the episodes.
So bottom line some fine and/or acceptable performances in an agreeably nuanced exploration of love. Mature theme generally free of overt sexuality and vulgarity; fine for family.Great! - MikeMagic
This is a wonderful movie with an incredible cast. Sean Connery is pure magic, Angeline Jolie is, well, Angelina Jolie. The movie is funny and dramatic at the same time. Though it covers separate lives you never feel out of the loop with any of the stories. Absolutely worth a watch and one of those movies where you cannot help wonder why there was so little fuss about it when it was released.
