Pocketful Of Miracles
"Capricious, winsome and whimsical. Altogether delightful!" -The Hollywood Reporter
Superbly directed by the peerless Frank Capra, this remake of Lady For A Day is pure Hollywood magic - an unforgettable combination of comedy, whimsy and romance that was nominated for three Oscars!
Impoverished Broadway peddler "Apple Annie" (Bette Davis) has a problem. Her daughter Louise (Ann-Margret), educated abroad since infancy, is coming for a visit and bringing her wealthy fiancé with her. The problem is that Louise has believed all her life that Annie's a wealthy dowager, and the poor old women doesn't know what to do! Enter "Dave the Dude" (Glenn Ford) - a big-hearted racketeer - who enlists the aid to pass Annie off as a high-society grande dame so Louise can marry her fairy-tale prince and everyone can live happily ever after!

trademark Capra - manwithoutaname
Pocketful of Miracles is trademark Capra, director of such classics as It's a Wonderful Life. Capra loves happy endings, and crusty characters who see their way to grace. The cast is uniformly superb, and they'll make you smile. Especially interesting is the debut of Peter Falk, looking very much like Columbo. He received an Oscar nomination for this role.Guys And Broads Ham It Up For Some Laughs - bwod
Damon Runyan wrote the story for this film (he also wrote "Guys and Dolls"), so if you're familiar with his subjects, you'll understand where this film is coming from. It's good fun, and quite touching as well. Frank Capra directs this movie competently. Bette Davis stands out as the old street peddlar, Apple Annie. And Glenn Ford fills the role of "The Dude" quite believably. With a huge supporting cast, beautiful period costumes, sets, autos, etc., you can't help but be absorbed in this Runyanesque romp. Worth a look. One and a half thumbs up.
