Used to love the old cartoon; unfortunately tried to make a 2 hour movie out of it was a little too much. Still an okay light musical. The jokes are thin but the good guys still come out ahead.
This focuses on the start of Popeye (maybe hoped for a series). Found out what spinach could do for him.Still enjoy it fter all these years - mistiblu
Just pulled this one out of my vault for another viewing. It hasn't lost its charm for me.
It neat to see a young, skinny, non-hairy Robin Williams without all the special effects and schtick that makes up his movies these days. The ongoing patter and occasional musical numbers are enjoyable. The actors fit their roles and keep me interested. The sets are beautifully done.
Kids today will probably not "get it" as they did not grow up with the Popeye character. As an adult who remembers, it is a pleasant way to pass the time without the usual blood, gore, sex or swearing that seem to pervade movies today.Who is Popeye? - TheShamus
Who is Popeye? In 1980, when this movie was originally made, Popeye was a pretty well known character. The character was still run nationally in comic strips. There were several cartoon incarnations which played frequently. Fast forward over 25 years ... and you don't hear much about Popeye any longer.
Popeye is a family movie which can be enjoyed by both children and their parents. While the kids are the main target, the movie runs just shy of 2 hours.
Robin Williams does a good job with the character, but don't expect a special effects bonanza. Shelley Duvall is cast well as the annoying Olive Oyl ... but I question whether kids, unfamiliar with the Popeye character will be able to keep their attention on this movie.
I saw the movie when it originally played in theatres, and it was never a blockbuster. By today's standards, Altman's film is almost slow for this type of light hearted movie.
Maybe it's a 3-star movie ... but I'll chime in on the low side. There are other movies which will keep kids attention better than this one.
