From an early age, David Lynch was inspired by the arts and the warm inner glow that comes with the pursuit of creative expression. Pretty as a Picture: The Art of David Lynch examines how this modern day Renaissance man makes a motion picture, and examines, through his artistic explorations, the very nature of creativity.

While this may not be a newly released documentary, it is a must-see, most Lynch fans know that David is not always revealing of the method behind his madness aka art.
I am becoming more of a Lynch fan each time I am exposed to both his work and others interpretations of its ever elusive meaning. Following viewing of this documentary I delved back into Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive remembering the vivid use of colour and spell binding imagery that has enthralled me for years.
This documentary is like a good poem that upon reading, bridges the gap between us, the reader, and the artist by finding some common ground. While I may not always understand Lynch, he presents his work in a way that is close enough to our reality to connect with, but different enough to both inspire us and at times, to create a sense of unease. This documentary helps the viewer see through David's eyes and that of his coworkers, to make sense of the weird and the beautiful. For a man who has often left fans with more questions than answers, how nice to finally hear from such a brilliant man and be given a taste of what makes him 'tick'. Keep your eyes and ears open for the part where he talks about making a clay head full of meat and cheese. I have been thinking about ant wranglers and the word wrangling ever since. That and how perhaps rotting carcasses can be art, art in motion that is. While a bit gross for my particular tastes, I think I got the point - life, and art, are about the sensory journey not the destination. I
Also to note, the documentary provides the viewer with a snapshot of the different people involved in David's films whom work more closely with David, than with other directors. Perhaps this is one of Lynch's artistic strengths - attention to detail and openess to other perspectives.Great Insights - Nik-
If you think David Lynch is weird, you should know that he also puts meat on a canvas and lets ants eat it, thus moving paint around. Want to know more about him? This film is a good start. It's more of a hodge-podge than an organized film, but I think that's a good thing. It gives little bits and pieces that all add up to, well, something.
But it never asks the really tough question -- what's with Mister Lynch's hair?
