What a charming movie, with a great cast of actors!
Kevin Kline really steals the show. He is fantastic when he plays the "foreigner", as he did in "French Kiss" with Meg Ryan.
The premise of the story is very interesting, and the scenario can easily take place in real life, even today. (Perhaps especially today, since we are so easily taken by things that are "off-centered", or exotic.)
Phoebe Cates is charming in her role of the "princess", aka Mary. I am surprised that we do not see more of her in other roles.Dull - Gaucho
This is a great idea for a movie and, quite frankly, got me curious to get the real story behind this film. But the execution lacked any sort of lustre, keeping it a very flat telling. Cates is sure pretty, but she is a kind of dead beat in this film; Kline recycles one of his 5 characters he does; and Lithgow is good, only for the minimal task they ask him to perform.
All in all, it's a fairy tale that can't capture the imagination.Thank heaven for Kevin - Elliott1
This is a sweet little romantic comedy, allegedly based partly on a "true" incident, that keeps your attention and provides a few giggles. Most of the fun comes from that arch show-stealer, Kevin Kline, whose portrayal of an embittered and pompous Greek butler had me in stitches.
