Proof Of Life
"A top-drawer adventure thriller with superb performances." -Jeffrey Lyons, WNBC-TV/ New York
Alice Bowman is world-traveled and savvy but nothing could prepare her for this. Rebels in a politically volatile Latin American country have kidnapped her husband for ransom. The asking price: $3 million.
Meg Ryan plays Alice and Russell Crowe is Terry Thorne, the hostage retrieval expert who becomes Alice's only hope in navigating a high-stakes game where terrorists value money over life, in this suspense-packed film named one of the year's 10-best films by Time. Taylor Hackford directs, steadily tightening the emotional vise as Terry and Alice try to smoke out the perpetrators and rescue Alice's husband (David Morse)... and as both confront the gnawing awareness that they're attracted to each other. Taut, thought-provoking and terrific, Proof Of Life is gripping proof that the romantic thriller is forcefully alive.

In my moms favourite words I found this movie very average. It is suprising that Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan hooked up during this movie because they do not seem to have any chemistry whatsoever in this movie. Meg Ryan searches for her missing husband and Russell Crowe is the hired help. meh!Proof of just average thriller - movie_goer
I agree with Rotten Tomato's about the premise of this film and lack of being a different "intense thriller". Proof of life unfolds slowly and sometimes choppy due to the poor editting, i just wanted more of a base for the characters and alittle bit extra detail to the story i felt at times i'd have to jump to the conclusion in order to keep along side. I couldn't understand why if Meg Ryan was so determined to return her husband safely what's with the kiss between her and Crowe?Tense Thriller. - cathyottawa
I disagree with Rotton Tomatos - I thought this movie avoided alot of thriller cliches. It certainly kept me guessing until the end.
This movie was unfairly overshadowed by a romance between stars Meg Ryan and Russel Crowe, but it's a decent film, that will have you asking, "what would I do?".
Here's the basic scenario - you're living in South America with your husband, when he is kidnapped by a gun wielding militia group, and held for millions of dollars in ransom. The company he works for recently discontinued their kidnapping insurance, and have no intention of paying the ransom. When the hostage negotiator (Russel Crowe) finds out there's nobody to foot the bill, he says "geez that's too bad" and hops on a plane out of there. What do you do?
I don't think it's any secret that Crowe decides to come back and help, but this movie takes alot of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
This movie is also unconventional with the love story, in that, you don't know who you want Ryan to end up with, Crowe or her husband, who is living in hell on earth with the rebels. It makes for a complicated, but I think satisfying ending.
