By day, Mark Hunter (Christian Slater, Very Bad Things, Broken Arrow) is a painfully shy new kid in a small Arizona town. But by night, he's Hard Harry, the cynical, uncensored DJ of a pirate radio station. Idolized by his high school classmates (who are unaware of his real identity), Harry becomes a hero with his fiercely funny monologues on sex, love and rock and roll. But when he exposes the corrupt school principal, she calls in the FCC to shut Harry down. An outrageous rebel with a cause, Slater gives a brilliant performance as the reluctant hero who inspires his classmates to find their own voices of rebellion and individuality.

this is a great movie. apparently it didn't do that well in the theaters. i don't how well pump up the volume has done for dvd/video/laserdisc sales, rentals, tv/ppv rights, etc. anyways, this is an awsome movie, everyone who was/is a teenager should see this movie if they haven't already. it has great acting and great music. if you have seen this before and haven;t seen it for a long time and are feeling nostalgic you should see it again.Pump it up indeed! This is the movie I decided Christian Slater was worthy of crush mode. What a cutey! The story unfolds to something that should resonate with most young people however maybe a little niave for current teens. I think it captures how unfair the adult world feels to a teenager as well as the fact that as teens their struggles and tribulations can be very adult in nature and/or feel very absolute, all consuming and adult. It shows that teens are adults in waiting and learning, how to be adults in the world.Substance behind Teen Film - Filmgal
Pump Up the Volume is one of those films that suffers from being lumped into to teen movie category of the late 1980's and early 1990s.
Mark, a shy schoolboy by day becomes the teenage locals heroes as DJ Hard Harry by night. The film deals with issues facing teenagers including suicide and peer pressure. Christian Slater gives one of his better prformances here as Mark. The film is able to deliver it's message to "Be Yourself" without coming across as too prachy or belittling to it's viewers.
