I enjoyed the documentary. Getting to see some of the behind the scenes training and relationships between Arnold and surrounding cast. Very motivating to watch before hitting the gym as well. I first discovered the documentary by stumbling upon some clips from it posted online.the most motivational docudrama - liquidpearl
outstanding docudrama on the world's greatest bodybuilder. arnold's mind and tactics are most impressive and his natural speech surpasses all of the acting lines in his hollywood repetoire. this is a very motivating film that wants the viewer to blow away any goals. the bonus features and where they are all at are very interesting to compare as well!Pumping Iron Is About More Than A Bunch of "Muscle-heads" - TheShamus
Essentially, Pumping Iron follows Arnold Schwarzenegger in the prime of his body building career. Arnold is showing working out at a time muscle building was still "part fad". It was a time where body builders would do their workouts in the sun where people could gather around and watch them train (Muscle Beach).
We are introduced to "Lou Ferrigno" as one of the mosters in search of the Mr. Universe title. Schwarzenegger uses psychology and other strategies to outwit his opponents.
On the surface, this is all about muscle building. However, this documentary is about a lot more. Schwarzenegger makes statements that he can excel in anything he applies himself to. In this case, he is focussing on his body --- but he makes the claim he can be great at anything he applies himself to. While Schwarzenegger was never confused with great acting, he was a popular actor who picked popular movies. When he applied himself to politics, he won the Governorship of California.
This is a documentary about what drives a person. What you can do when you apply yourself. What you can do when you "hype" yourself -- develop a personna.
There are plenty of extras which make this DVD worthwhile -- expecially the modern interviews with the body builders 20 years later (some are still in great shape -- others are not).
A good watch ... whether you are a fan of body building or not.
