Pushing Tin
"A High-Flying Comedy" - ABC-TV
In the tradition of Grosse Point Blank comes an unconventional comedy about two air traffic controllers whose intense rivalry and penchant for one-upmanship causes hilarious havoc with their careers, their marriages – and the planes in their airspace.
Nick Falzone (John Cusack) is the busiest, and the best, air traffic controller on Long Island – until Russell Bell (Billy Bob Thornton) roars into town like a motorcycle – riding cowboy. Fueled by caffeine and machismo, the two men embark upon an uproarious contest of wit and wills that can ultimately only have one winner. Co – starring Cate Blanchett and Angelina Jolie, Pushing Tin is “one of a kind...a high-flying, free spirited, wildly funny blast of originality.” (CBS-TV)

I'm a huge fan of John Cusack. I never got around to seeing this movie when it first came out, but I'm glad I waited. It's funny to see Angelina and Billy Bob Thorton way back when, and then compare her to now. Anyway, good movie about a rivalry between two air traffic controllers in New York. Some tense moments in the movie. Deals with a moral marriage issue in a weird way.Don't Expect Much from Pushing Tin - Filmgal
Pushing Tin has a lot going for it- a great cast and a unique concept. Instead, it fails miserably and is almost painful to watch this excellent cast of talented actors run around in this worthless film.
Nick (Cusack) and Russell (Thornton) are air traffic controllers who find themselves in constant competition with eachother at work and in their home life. They both eye the other's wife (Blanchett and Jolie) as opposing love triangles begin to form. The film is based on how far they will go to gain the upper hand over the other in their endless competition to be the best in all fields.
The cast is top-notch but their talents are wasted in this dreadful film. Angelina Jolie has little screen time as the drunk Mary and Blanchett is trapped in her suburban housewife role. Cusack is the only bright spot in the film as he plays his typical lovable character, although in this case, he's not even that lovable.
At 2 hours long, Pushing Tin is at least 30 minutes too long. Unable to make up its mind, the film fluctuates betwen romance, drama, comedy, and even action-thriller all while failing to completely pull off any one of those genres. It starts off great reveiling the high-pressure world of the air traffice controller and ends with cheesy and over-used tactics which purge all drama from the moment, making you glad the movie is finally over.
Skip this one unless you are a huge fan of the cast...even then, it's a little hard to stomach psat the halfway point.
