A Striking Film of a Different Time - MacAskill
My parents were living in Boston during this scandal, and watching the film with them brought back all kinds of memories; from the communist witch hunts to the rough edges of TV and the impact on everyday life. The central character in the film (played by Fiennes) went on to have a quiet but purposeful academic life, which probably saved him. Worth watching for the analogies one can draw from selling one's soul for immediate gratification; and the implications of that.See this if you like period pieces! - TV_Adict
I love this movie! Such a great view - the plot is completely character-driven, and the development is really well done, with superb acting by all the cast, very well directed as well. A good look at the beginning of the end of the age of innocence in America, the themes of honesty, fame, prejudice, and personal failure are lovingly explored in this really superb film. If you like period pieces or character dramas, you will like this one for sure!Perfect - Bec-
I've loved this movie since it first came out, when I was about 10 years old. This is my favorite Redford film to date; everything about it is wonderful. The acting-- Ralph Fiennes is spot on, and Turturro manages to be both maddening, pathetic and hilarious all at once, sort of a Brooklyn version of William H. Macy's child star character in "Magnolia"... sort of. David Paymer and Hank Azaria (far from Apu) have wonderful chemistry and perfect timing. There is also a cameo by Martin Scorsese as a (somewhat) sleazy suit. Most importantly, the movie captures a period and a feeling extremely well. The opening scene hums with millions of televisions and a palpable excitement as people all over America tune in to watch the quiz shows. Politics and class and racial tensions are prevalent, and when the quiz shows are finally publicly revealed to be a fraud, you feel as if something really has been lost forever, even if that something was superficial to begin with. Last words- the movie is beautiful-- costumes are wonderful, colors are rich, and everything is visually appealing.
