Much as I want to love the historical horror genre, this fell short. It had an intriguing opening, and Neal McDonough, but the middle fell apart so badly that we shut it off at the 45 minute mark. By then the body count was so high that there was little chance of any significant suspense being built, and the ending had been so clearly foreshadowed that continuing didn't seem worthwhile.Yuck! - AngelWings
I guess I'm one of those persons who just didn't "get it". I found the acting to be bland and uninteresting. I think think Guy Pearce couldn't act his way out of a paper bag, especially after watching this horribly put together film. The only enjoyment I got out of watching this film was the credits rolling by. I was thourghly dissapointed by this film and would not recomend it to anyone because you won't be able to get back the hour and 45 minutes you just wasted watching it.Terrfific Cult Flick - kav2001c
Well done black comedy/horror/period piece
It defies traditional genres
What truly lets this film rise above is how it is put together... the acting is top notch, the costumes and sets are well done, and even little touches (like the music which is incredible) add so much to the overall film
Guy Pearce plays a disgraced military man. One who during a battle pretended to be dead while his company was slaughtered. After drinking a dead mans blood (and its inferred gaining his strength) he climbs out of the burial pit and captures (single handedly) the enemy commmand.
His superiors think he is a coward, but have to promote him, so they send him to the most remote outpost in the colony.
When he arrives, they meet a man who tells them a tale about how his travelling companions were all killed and eaten... the army men go to investigate (despite the local natives protests about Wendigo, a spirit who consumes the flesh of another man)
This one is definatly a cult classic
