Red Dragon
Before The Silence of the Lambs, The First and Most Thrilling Chapter in the Hannibal Lector Trilogy.
Anthony Hopkins reprises his Oscar-winning role as the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lector in the thrilling prequel critics are hailing as "a suspenseful masterpiece!" (FOX-TV)
After capturing Dr. Lector, FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton) retires-only to be called back to active duty to hunt down the elusive killer, The Tooth Fairy (Ralph Fiennes). Red Dragon is the electrifying, critically acclaimed movie that "returns the series to The Silence of the Lambs form" (Jack Matthews, New York Daily News).

Red Dragon is a much simpler version of 1991 film in many ways - aj79
This is the third Lecter film to be made by Anthony Hopkins, although it is actually a prequel that introduces the character for the first time. The novel was also successfully adapted as the film 'Manhunter', some fifteen years earlier. 'Red Dragon' is a creepy thriller that very nearly recaptures the same level of suspense as Lecter's first film outing 'The Silence of the Lambs'. The format is much the same also, with the FBI agent consulting with Lecter in his cell, but this time instead of escaping Lecter is able to control events on the outside without ever leaving jail. Anthony Hopkins is astonishing once more as Lecter, a role that seems to suit him. The only sour note is that Edward Norton sometimes plays Graham as a kind of accidental hero which conflicts with his other side – the competent agent who captured Lecter in the first place. Red Dragon makes one appreciate Silence of the Lambs. I don't mean that in a negative way. Red Dragon is a film you're going to want to check out. Ratner's more than proven himself with this entry in a series that's boasted some pretty impressive names behind the camera (Jonathan Demme, Ridley Scott). Then, watch Silence of the Lambs afterwards. I guarantee it'll make a great double feature. If you want to see this movie done right, rent Manhunter - Max905
I wholeheartedly agree with Clauditorium's review. (Though I must take issue with the hair comment -- it was, after all, the 1980s. And hairstyles were truly that horrid in the 1980s.)
Manhunter had chemistry -- both between Petersen and Cox and between Mann and his movie. Red Dragon has none. Even Harvey Keitel falls flat. Compare him to Dennis Farina, who appeared to be genuinely conflicted about dragging Petersen's character back into action.
The soundtrack was largely forgettable. Again Manhunter succeeds where Red Dragon fails. The music complemented the story's mood whereas it seems an afterthought in Red Dragon. Given Manhunter was made in the 1980s and Michael Mann was at the helm, I have to assume he had some hand in that as well.
Do yourself a favour: avoid this movie and watch Manhunter.Explosive! - movie_goer
"Talk about a Guilty Pleasure!"
Red Dragon in my opinion was better then Hannibal and yes and even, Silence of the Lambs. It didn't hurt that Edward Norton joined the cast as a very valuable player. It was the first of the all sequels to stretch down in layers of who DR. Hannibal Lecter was, and not just for his crimes. Both Norton and Anthony Hopkins were very much intuned with each others acting style. They played off each other smoothly Beethoven and his piano's greatest Symphony.
