Set in the Highlands of Scotland in the 1700s, this is the story of Rob Roy, a farmer- cattleman, who gets a loan from the nobility only to be robbed and his courier killed. As if that is not enough to befall one man, his wife (Jessica Lange) is assaulted by this bad guy (Tim Roth) also. Of course these acts must be avenged and Rob Roy has to be the man to do it. There are a couple parts of the movie that seemed to drag a little, but for the most part, it was compelling. Good cast and good acting all around.Tim Roth Rules - Woody2
What more can I say- the other reviewers obviously enjoyed it as much as I did. Liam Neeson is suitably gloomy, dour and Scottish ( although Irish!), but a great actor. Tim Roth steals the whole film- you start hoping he will survive! beautifil scenery, great legs, and Jessica Lange does a creditable job.
I agree- better than Braveheart.highland lustre - billie
I love this movie. Liam Neeson is so cool in a kilt, (as well as being such a good actor) and well suited to the role of this larger-than-life folk hero. Jessica Lange is his equal in all ways. Together they are the quintessential mythical couple, strong, bonded, courageous, determined, loving, and good looking. The highlands are great to look at: that first scene of the highlanders striding over the heather, sporrans swinging, always gets me. They look so manly! John Hurt is, as always, brilliant, and the guy who played Archibald was excellent also. In fact, there was not an off-note in the film, it was beautifully made. Certainly better than Braveheart, which came out around the same time, but whereas Braveheart felt very contrived, Rob Roy rings true. Enjoy this bit of Scottish history, even if it's a bit exaggerated to make a point.
