Robin And Marian
Love Is The Greatest Adventure Of All.
The legend of Robin Hood continues with Oscar winners Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn in this high-spirited adventure. Many years have passed since Robin (Connery) led the fight for the poor people of Nottingham. Now, he and Little John return from the crusades under the command of King Richard the Lionheart (Richard Harris). But when Richard is accidentally slain, the mad King John assumes the throne, and Robin regroups the members of his old Sherwood Forest band. When the king orders the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robert Shaw), Robin's old nemesis, to remove the clergy from the countryside, Robin moves swiftly into action. He rescues Maid Marian (Hepburn), his erstwhile love who has since become a nun, and their old flame is rekindled. But the rivalry between Robin and the sheriff is also renewed, and now they must prepare for their final confrontation.

As a fan of the Robin Hood stories in particular the Errol Flynn film and a fan of Sean Connery, I thought this would be a fun romantic adventure film. Instead it appears there was no script and they made it up as they went along. 10 minutes in we were fast forwarding, hoping it would get better. A few minutes later we realized this is all it is. It seems like the actors are laughing at the film also and if that is an inside joke or not it doesn't matter, there was nothing funny here or fun. Back in the envelope it went, not to be watched againSuch a long time ago! - billie
1976! Lost in the mists. But the story holds up. I've always loved Robin Hood stories, and always wondered how it all ended. This movie, the script borrowed loosely from various legends and stories of the day, gives a satisfactory conclusion. Marion poisoned them both, and it was truly the only way out for the aging warrior and his beloved. Every other way was unsuitable to all that they were.
I don't like Sean Connery, but he was tolerable here. As a rule, the acting was fine. So many big stars, so many of them dead now. I thought the sets and costumes were really good, very faithful to the era. Unfortunately, Monty Python has ruined me for medieval stories, though, and I kept expecting the battling knights to spout blood and make remarks like, "just a scratch". etc. and I expected the whole forest to get up and run away when John approached. But Monty Python aside, this is a very good film. It's bittersweet, to see what happened to the old men 20 years after their hayday. It's good to know Robin died in a manner that is poetically perfect. Not so merry men! - AandW
I rented this because I like most versions of Robin Hood... The Kevin Costner version, Menin Tights with Carey Elwes, even the animated Disney Version. Plus there is the added bonus that it stars Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, two greats. But this was a HUGE disappointment. I would have given it 3 stars up until the last 10 minutes. But the end just plain ruined it. Brutal. I couldn't believe my eyes. It may be the worst ending of ALL TIME. If you don't believe me, just match it. Boooo. Hissss.
