Rotten tomatoes gave this film bad reviews but i didn't listen. di caprio's adorable face could not save this dreadful mess.yelling might work on a theater stage but on television and film you don't need to project so hard.the acting was so overdone it looked they were going to give themselves a heart attack..they all must have had sore throats at the end of the day.the 1968 version of romeo and Juliet got much better reviews. think i will give that one a try.Great modern adaptation - Karine11
I love this modern adaption of Shakespeare's play. After reading the play with my grade 10 students, most of them enjoyed seeing the different perspective this movie offers. The performances are great. The story line is well followed and the lines are taken from the play, but another dimension is added with the props (for example, the swords are replaced by guns) and the setting. I think reading and understanding the original play first helps appreciate this movie. An Intelligent Postmodern Adaptation of R + J - operabuff
Faithful this adaptation is not but it is a fun and intelligent postmodern take on Shakespeares timeless classic. Its directorial style is reminiscent of a 90s music video but don't let that prevent you from seeing the subtlety and thought behind Baz Luhrman's R + J. It is advisable to see it twice for precisely that reason. Everything from the costuming to the recurrent visual imagery is all extremely well thought through. The acting by the entire cast is impeccable. A must see for anyone desiring a slightly iconoclastic take on Shakespeare but also worth a try even for sceptics of such postmodern adaptations.
