Jack Grimaldi (Oldman) leads more than a double life: He's a veteran cop, a two-timing husband and a corrupt mob informant. But when the Feds enlist him to protect Russian gangster Mona Demarkov (Olin) at the same time that the Mafia orders him to kill her, Jack's world of greed and lust begins to crack. Complicating this already dangerous situation is Mona herself, a deductive schemer who entangles Jack in a deadly, depraved plan of her own!

One of my husband's favourite movies of all time - Solangel
My husbandloves Gary Oldman's acting. The scenes this actor shared with Olin in this dark police movie made by knuckles turn white and honestly, her character had me fooled as much as she had Oldman's character fooled - every time. This movie played with my brain, even though there were stereotypes (like Lewis' character, who was no surprise). I often felt uncomfortable. I think my husband (who had already seen this movie a few times) enjoyed watching me squirm. I felt that the last scene with Oldman and Olin and the explanation given was a little limp compared to the rest, but the very end made up for it. Enjoy!Tries to be clever, but fails - Zigzag
Maybe Im too cynical, but frankly, I thought this movie was not up to par with comparable noire films. I found that it just didnt capture me and typically I love this sort of film. Juliette Lewis, who I find can be a very believable actress, in this role, I find it did not make use of her talent. The leading low-voiced lady (who's name escapes me at the moment) tries hard to convince us of her nastiness but falls short. ...The postive about this movie is that the story itself is not bad. I think it could have been better directed, as some of the shots were just too typical (the bell over the door ringing is tiresome - a tiresome and overused template) Anyway, hope this helps - I know this film has received many rave reviews, but I just cant support that viewpoint.Memorable. This movie kind of got unfairly dismissed as a Tarentino wannabe.
The script is clever, and the acting spot on. Gary Oldman does a great job of portraying a conflicted man, who can't understand why he does the things he does.
Annabella Sciorra gives a fabulous performance, that is appreciated even more on a second viewing (when you know the secret she knows).
Juliette Lewis plays the same sort of sweet but clueless girl she did in Kalifornia.
And finally, Lena Olin is a scene stealer who absolutely oozes sex, especially when she's being evil.
All in all a very enjoyable movie, with a very moving ending.
