Runaway
"Michael Crichton's robots-on-the-rampage rouser is imaginative and fast-paced..." -Los Angeles Herald Examiner
From the creator of JURASSIC PARK and SPHERE comes another spine-tingling sci-fi action thriller. It is the future. A sinister plot is turning helpful robots into assassins, and a cop is caught in a deadly showdown with the madman controlling the killer machines.
They were crafted for the purpose of serving man. But now, guided by an evil force, they're committing murder in this fast-paced, futuristic action-adventure. Tom Selleck stars as Jack Ramsay, a sergeant in the Runaway Squad - a security force dedicated to the termination of defective or "Runaway" robots. Ramsay and his assistant Thompson (Cynthia Rhodes) are called in when two electronic engineers meet violent deaths. They discover a link between the murders and the development of a terrifying new weapon by an evil mastermind. Ramsay and Thompson are attacked by murderous robots as they close in on the brilliant and insane electronics genius behind it all, Charles Luther (Gene Simmons). Then the deadly chase begins in this taut, high-tech thriller.

The future, as seen from 1984!
Runaway tries to present a world in which robots and (low-level) AIs are common place, but alas lacks the budget to recognize the world outside of it's required plot devices. You'll boggle at the fact that there are person-seeking, guided bullets, yet all monitors are CRTs and I believe there's still a rotary phone used. The police procedure is also all over the map, with reporting crews being where they shouldn't be (and, rightly, paying the price), and the most apathetic driving public ever seen on screen ("The drive home was alright, honey. There were only four mysterious explosions around my car this evening.")
Unlike it's likely influence Blade Runner, Runaway has not aged well at all, and should only be seen as a curiosity to how the future was viewed 25+ years ago.
Very hard to believe Michael Crichton (Coma, Jurassic Park, The Great Train Robbery, Rising Sun) was behind this turkey!Run! Killer Robots Abound! - Mikhail
Heh. Ok. Not that bad. Actually, looking and the world today, we might just need this guy one day soon.
Selleck plays a hi-tech cop, who's job it is to corall runaway robots before they can cause any harm. How hard could that be? Well, in this near-future movie, robots are in every home, working on every job. Robot maids, receptionists, security guards and construction workers now populate every corner of the country and when they go wrong, disaster ensues. Stopping them is all in a day's work for Officer Tom.
But what if someone started deliberately making them go wrong? Well then, you've got a movie, with the evil looking Gene Simmons and the ever-tasty Kirstie Ally.
Not a runaway hit at the box office, but this cult classic will entertain you for an evening. If you like Tom Selleck or semi-cheese filled SF, you'll like this fine.
