How both these men scored Oscar nominations for these performances is beyond me. I wasn't sure if Roberts was suppose to be a Southerner or suffered brain damage while in prison but his accent was inconsistent and sounded like a really bad forrest gump impression. As for Voigt, who is an accomplished actor, this film looks like it gave him the chance to chew on any and all scenery around him. If only he had bit on that train; maybe then it would have slowed down. He sounded like a thug version of Stallone, calling everyone a 'punk'. Editing and Cinematography are well done, but the film really offers nothing else of substance.I'll take the next train... - movie_goer
Disaster in the making! Absolute rubbish!
Besides the fact that i could Barely make out what John Voight was saying half of the time the script was poorly written and if any speaking was made most of it just rotten swearing and none- sense that was unrelated to the films direction. Sure there was suspense... and a vision of a great film in the making but that was the cameramans doing.A hard, nasty, brilliant film - fung0
With a Russian director and a script by Akira Kurosawa, you know this is going to be out of the ordinary. It doesn't hurt that you've also got two underrated actors in career-best performances. John Voight is brilliant as the tough-as-nails Manny, and Eric Roberts is a revelation as the naive younger con.
This is not necessarily an easy movie to watch. There isn't as much violence as you might expect, but there are a few key moments that give the film a razor-sharp edge. That's what it's about: conquering fear, conquering pain, to find freedom within oneself. It's a powerful film, well worth seeking out.
