Excellent movie. Wonderful to look at. A bit long, but that's ok because it kept my interest. I did wonder in the end, what happened to his friend and wife back in Tibet after Harrer left.
I really enjoyed this. I liked the exploration of the man, Harrer, and his friend, and what happened to him in Tibet. Also the Chinese occupation was fairly shown. I am not certain if it is exactly accurate that Harrer was THAT important to the Dalai Lama, but I do hope so. It was better than I expected in showing the Tibetan religious rituals, and the scenery was magnificent. I agree that the supporting actor deserved greater notice. The fact that Hollywood didn't get excited about the movie just reveals how shallow Hollywood is. No love interest, no action scenes, no police sirens, no monsters, threfore no interest by the Melting Pot. But this is a brilliant and informative movie.

Amazing Vistas - brightsgrove

Amazing vistas from director Jean-Jacques Annaud. Brad Pitt meets a young dalaia lama, you can't make up story lines like this.
The film moves along nicely and kept us interested.

...as someone already involved in the free Tibet movement, this was a project close to his heart.

He and co star David Thewlis (who has almost as much screen time as Pitt, and should have been more recognized for his contribution to this film) were actually banned from ever entering China because of this movie.

This is based on the true story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian whose adventurous life led him to befriend the Dali Lama, just before the Chinese occupation.

About two thirds of the movie is devoted to Heinrich's life story, with about one third showcasing Tibet's struggle with the Chinese, as Heinrich witnessed it.

I wouldn't say the facts are distorted, but they are somewhat hollywoodized, if you get my meaning. Still, it provides a nice summary, especially for those who know nothing of the occupation.

Pitt certainly struggles with his Austrian accent, but you soon get used to it, and it ceases to stick out like a sore thumb. I think the main reason this movie never found it's audience was the 139 minute run time. That, and the fact that there's no big special effects, no love interest for Pitt, and no happy hollywood ending.

There is much adventure here though, and strong performances by the supporting cast. It kept my interest for the duration.
