Sgt. Bilko
The Army is known for churning out lean, mean fighting machines intent on protecting our great nation. But at Fort Baxter, there's one unit that can t even form a straight line ... Steve Martin stars with Dan Aykroyd and Phil Hartman in an outrageous comedy from Imagine Entertainment. Martin is the inexplicable, the incorrigible, the invincible Sgt. Ernie Bilko, leader of a ragtag group of the sorriest soldiers ever to enlist in the armed forces. Instead of training his troops for battle, he passes on his legacy of gambling and shunning responsibility.
Times get tough however, when the base is threatened with a shutdown, and a by-the-book adversary, Major Thorn (Hartman), is intent on taking Bilko's reputation down with it. Now, all bets are on Bilko to drum up his biggest scheme yet to save Fort Baxter ... and clear his name!

To get past 3 stars I think you really have to appreciate Steve Martins humour. A lot of it is silly satire, but there is an excellent cast here with Dan Aykroyd, Phil Hartman and Chris Rock (his early years). I guess today's slap stick comedy's are often a lot cruder then films of this era. Time change. If you like Steve Martin . . . - Icebiker
If you watched the old TV shows, movies like this can't help but disappoint. Steve Martin doesn't capture Phil Silvers (he didn't try), and jokes from the 50s don't always work in a 90s. You can the same for Bewitched, The Flinstones, etc. etc.
So, if you're looking for a remake of the old Phil Silvers TV show, forget it.
But, if you like Steve Martin, it's good frothy fun.
Also, you'll see Chris Rock at his most subdued. Really, I wouldn't have known, but for the credits.Classic Steve Martin - Mikhail
Which admittedly doesn't add up to an amazing movie, but if you are a Steve Martin fan, you'll enjoy this one.
Set in the scene of the classic tv show, Steve Martin does his best to do justice to the original character of Sgt. Bilko. Does he fall short? A little. You have to like Martin's style of comedy or this movie falls way short.
The plot is fairly silly, his supporting cast picked from the rejects at SNL, but if you have nothing better to do one night and want to enjoy a couple of giggles and a movie you can make while watching and still understand what is going on afterwards, this will work.
