Silkwood
The controversial true story that inflamed a nation.
Meryl Streep is "stunning" (The New York Times) in this shocking true story about one woman's struggle against a huge corporation. Nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Actress (Streep) and Best Supporting Actress (Cher), this daring, provocative and critically acclaimed drama just "shouldn't be missed" (Newsweek)!
Karen Silkwood (Streep) lives a free-spirited existence with two friends (Kurt Russell and Cher) who work with her at an Oklahoma nuclear facility. It's only when she discovers she's been exposed to radiation that Karen's conscience awakens, and soon she is digging for evidence of wrongdoing at her company. But her sudden zeal for safer working conditions may come at a high price as she alienates friends...and possibly even puts her own life in peril.

A long half life - Diversitility
Nuclear by-products have a very long half life, and the same could be said for this excellent film. The subject is obviously burningly contemporary, and the film has aged well, due in large part to the brilliant performances, most notably that of Meryl Streep. The film is based on the true story of Karen Silkwood, who takes on the bosses of an Oklahoma nuclear facility. Her learning curve will remind viewers of the experiences of Sally Field in Norma Rae, another classic of the genre. I am a huge fan of social activist films, and this is a very good one. We see how uninformed, uneducated people are lied to and used as cannon fodder, while corporations prey on fears about job losses in communities that are depressed and exploited. Can another Silkwood situation arise today? Don't bet that it won't!Classic Streep - FilmJunkie
A very interesting movie above winning safety rights and the dangerous ground of fighting for justice. Meryl Streep stars as Karen Silkwood, a woman fighting for safe protocol at the nuclear plant she works at.
On the same note as 'Erin Brokovich' and 'Norma Rae', this film stands apart because of the great writing and direction as well as a typically great performance by Streep and by Cher as her lesbian roommate.
Important film.
