Entertaining...But Two Sequels? - MovieProf
I’ll keep my review to the first film, since it is by far the best. This popular 1977 action-comedy stars Burt Reynolds, Sally field, Jerry Reed, and Jackie Gleason. It is Gleason, though, as Sherriff Buford T. Justice who steals the show.
The film follows the antics of the Bandit (Reynolds) and his companion (Reed) as they attempt to travel over 1000 miles in 28 hours to haul 400 illegal cases of Coors beer from eastern Texas back to Georgia. On the way, they pick up Carrie (Field), who is escaping her own wedding. Her husband-to-be happens to be Justice’s own son. Hence, the chase is on to stop the Bandit.
This film feels dated in parts: the soundtrack, apart from Jerry Reed’s songs, is at times highly distracting and flamboyant for the action on the screen; as well, as good as Gleason is, he does get repetitive after a while—the same angry tirades again and again. However, in the whole, this is an entertaining little film with some great car stunts. I am baffled as to why it was made into a trilogy, but I guess that’s the irony in Hollywood: make a profit, and film moguls want sequels.good ok worst - Playitagain
The first and second were watchable. The third was so lost it is amazing it ever found it's way to being recorded with so many errors and blatant low budgeting. It is obvious why Sally Fields never appears and Burt Reynolds makes barely a cameo. The third is possibly the worst "movie" I have ever watched, PG nudity and all. It is time I wish I could get back...Classic - Bill_03948
The original Smokey & The Bandit is a classic. The movie started a craze for CB's as some may remember and school teachers were showing the movie in class while kids wrte essays. The popularity of mobile communications, fast cars, fast trucks and disrespect for the law made this movie an instant classic. I do feel the second movie, although had a long list of stars was rushed and no originality to the story line. The third movie in the trilogy was a total waste of time and should have never been made. I forced myself to watch the 3rd movie thinking to myself this has to get better only to find it doesnt. Where #1 I give 5 out of 5, #2 3 out of 5 I feel #3 was so bad it doesnt even deserve a 1 out of 5.
