What a beautiful and moving film this is!
The screenplay for this movie matches the greatness of the novel. This is a story about prejudice, obsession, letting go of one's baggage and eventual forgiveness. The filmmakers assembled a perfect cast of actors, including the great Max von Sydow as Miyamoto's defence attorney.
As the author and screenwriter said, the weather, certainly the snow, is an important character in the story. The cinematographer captured the beauty of the snowy landscape in the Pacific Northwest, but also the menacing quality and the sense of helplessness of being caught in a violent snowfall.
All in all, a beautiful adaptation of a magnificent novel. The name says it all. - JRock512
If you are unsure of this movie just look at the title and know this will be beautiful but also a bit arty. hopefully you will give it a chance as this is both a well done and sad love story as well as a good courtroom drama rolled into one with gorgeous cinematography and understated acting as the cherry on top.moving story, beautifully filmed, but not for everyone - goodflick
The story is intensely moving, about unrequited love, war, and racial discrimination, set in and around a murder trial on an island in the US Pacific northwest. Although the story is fiction, it is an important story to tell, based on real events from history: the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, and the injustices experienced then and since. Similar internment and the same kind of injustice happened in Canada too. Prejudice, bigotry, and intolerance are ugly sides of human nature and must be exposed and understood, lest they be repeated.
The casting is excellent, and there's never a false note. The scenery is gorgeous; it and the weather are characters in their own right.
The film story is very true to the novel, including the non-linear storytelling. Some may find the film choppy as it moves between multiple time frames, and thus difficult to follow. But the context of each time frame is always obvious, and if you don't mind a non-traditional approach to storytelling your time will be well rewarded.
