Sommersby
She knew his face, his touch, his voice. She knew everything about him but the truth.
People remember Jack Sommersby. They know him as a bitter, loutish man. But when Jack returns home after the Civil War, he's tender, caring and resourceful. Has the war changed him... or is the man calling himself Jack Sommersby an impostor?
Richard Gere and two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster are a match made for the ages in this period romance rich in mystery, detail and splendid performances. They portray Jack mounts. If he isn't the man she married, Laurel knows he is the man she always wanted. But an ultimate test of their love and Jack's identity awaits. Jack must stand trial for his life and the outcome makes one thing sure: you'll remember Sommersby.

I'm all about the hook up, so when Richard Gere returns and is able to win back the affection of his estranged wife, I'm all for it. Well written and Gere and Foster play a believable couple who find their way back to each other. You debate back and forth with your self the whole movie if Gere is who he says he is. The last scene where he's calling out for Laurel completely ruined me. Absolutely breathtaking. Love that she's pregnant in the end. Wonderful and horrible story. Is He Or Isn't He - revsdd
For the most part I found this movie to be nothing more than a routine movie about a man who may not be who he claims to be. But then, somehow, the last twenty minutes or so struck a chord with me and made the whole thing worthwhile.
Richard Gere plays Jack Sommersby (or does he?), a Confederate veteran of the Civil War who returns home after several years in a Federal prison camp. He is accepted by the townsfolk and by his wife, but he is a changed man (war could do that) and suspicions begin to rise. Ultimately, the question of his true identity becomes a life and death issue when he faces trial for murder. Is it or is it not a case of mistaken identity?
Richard Gere handled this role superbly. I was very impressed with him. I was less impressed with Jodie Foster, who seemed terribly miscast to me. Be warned: this is not a fast-paced movie, and it sometimes bogs down, but it manages to hold its own. Not a classic by any means, but worth a look-see.A Good Name - Pass_the_popcorn
Can a person change their reputation? Keeps you guessing on several levels, has this man truly turned over a new leaf or is he just running another con that will cost the whole town the last of their precious heirlooms; in fact, who is this man? What should a person do to protect their reputation? What is a good name really worth? Great costumes, cast and dialogue, with the added bonus that the issues it raises actually make you think. My favourite Gere movie.
