Southern Comfort
It's The Land Of Hospitality... Unless You Don't Belong.
From the director of The Long Riders comes this eye-widening, gut-wrenching tale of backwoods terror that "draws you into the eerily beautiful Louisiana bayou... then has you running for your life" (Pauline Kael, New Yorker)! Keith Carradine, Power Boothe and Peter Coyote lead a "first-rate ensemble" (Newsweek) in this "exciting, arresting and tautly told suspenser" (Variety)
When nine National Guardsmen enter the Louisiana swamp for routine training, they are unaware that just a handful of their ranks will make it out alive. Through an error in judgment, they incite an all-out war with some angry Cajuns who know the territory like the backs of their hands. Armed with a precious few bullets, and confused by the dimly lit, moss-covered maze into which they've stumbled, the innocent guardsmen know they'll be picked off one by one, until they come up with a solution using the only resources they have left... themselves.

This is a like it or hate it type of film. I did like it and Powers Boothe and Kieth Carridine are very good here. A group of national guardsmen get turned around in the Louisiana bayou and get in a little over their heads with the locals kind of a platoon meets deliverence type of film. The bayou is a great backdrop for the film and you will find yourself glued to the screen at times. Well worth the rentalSouthern Trash - Craigan
I have just recently gotten into Walter Hill's work and up until this film it has been great. Southern Comfort is not only a bad Walter Hill film, it is a bad film in general. I found it hard to believe that a group of soldiers in the US Army could be systematically dismantled by a group of Southern Yokels. I found the story to be weak, the action to be dry and the characters to be non engaging. If you want to check out Walter Hill's work steer clear of this film, go for The Warriors or Streets of Fire.Tour of duty meets day of the dead - Chucky
If you like cheeze this one is for you. The premise is fun and kind of tongue in cheek. Being former military, I'm used to platoon leaders that are all attitude and shit for brains. Also there is at least one anti social and one clusterfuck on every squad. The rest of the guys tend to pull together to keep things running if the got a decent sarge. This is worse with weekend warriors like the guard where they never have a chance to really gel into a unit. I've known Cajuns first hand, this included Viet Nam vets; I found the ones I've met to be way different than is portrayed here, although I have never been in the bayou so I can't speak for all of them. I guess you could rile folks up if you go into where they live and start destrying their property like that. As far as I know, the military have no duristiction to arrest civvies or sieze their property without the governors direct orders. Thats what these guys did, arrested Americans, took em prisoner, blew up his house. You could use the 90 minuts that you'd spend watching this film doing something else but its not a bad waste of time. I can't reccomend it
