Stand And Deliver
Stand and Deliver does just that. This moving, acclaimed crowd pleaser is the dynamic saga of real0life heroes determined to conquer a foe few people dare confront: the National Advanced Placement Calculus Exam.
Edward James Olmos gives a performance of fire and grit as Jaime Escalante, a math teacher at East Los Angeles' Garfield High who refuses to write off his inner0city students as losers. Escalante cajoles, pushes, threatens and inspires 18 kids who were struggling with fractions to become math whizzes.

Decent family movie - but familiar theme - snickerdoodle
This movie is based on a true story - I guess this explains the somewhat predictable story-line that is very similar to movies like "Lean on me" and "Coach Carter" (movies I found quite a bit better than this one) - struggling kids in a struggling school who get motivated to better themselves by an inspirational teacher - which it seems to me is a story worthwhile of being told over and over again.
The teacher character got a bit on my nerves after a while though - I have seen others play a similar role better -
overall, it isn't the worst - then again, it's certainly not the best either.I found the acting dry at times ... but the story was - TheWorldOfTeE
inspiring ... it shows that hard work does pay off even if you fail the first time ... never give up perserverance is the key ... i was not impressed with the acting I found it to be very boring ... and a lot of the time i could not understand what the TEACHER was saying ... racism and bigotry still lives on today ... so KUDOS to the director who was not afraid to show this in a movie ...Edward James Olmos delivers! - Cricri7
This may not be the best movie ever made, but Olmos delivers an amazing performance as an inspiring high school teacher. Lou Diamond Phillips also is great in this movie as he plays a tough kid that does not know whether to go straight or go the "gangster" route as his friends. He delivers a very sensitive performance in a tough movie. It is a sad thing to see him in a reality show now because he really has an amazing talent that he should put to better use!
This movie is about an inspiring high school teacher and a tough class in the projects. It may tell a story that has been told many times but it works here. Even if the movie dates a bit, it has not aged a bit.
