Stealing Home
For ex-ballplayer Billy Wyatt (Mark Harmon), whose drive never matched his big-leagure prospects, the high point of his life was summer of 1964. Decades later, Billy returns home to recall the past-and the person who made it special.
Harmon and Jodie Foster star in Stealing Home, a bittersweet story "beautifully written a la Moonstruck" in which "you'll spend a couple of hours lost in a wonderful world" (Bill Cosford, Miami Herald). As a burnout seeking redemption, Chicago Hope's Harmon hits the mark as the older Billy, and the luminous Foster sparkles as Katie, the friend and mentor who vibrantly draws the loose ends of Billy's past and present together. Buoyed by a marvelous golden-oldies soundtrack, Stealing Home is a warm, wistful, memory-lane journey.

Athletes often face a rough mid-life period as their skills diminish and their careers wind down, since their sport so defines who and what they are. This topic has great potential for drama and poignancy, yet few good films have been made on the subject. This movie has a beautifully sad central love story, with aging minor league ballplayer Billy Wyatt (Mark Harmon) remembering the (then) older woman who inspired him so many years before (Jodie Foster), and trying to come to terms with the route his career and life have taken. So, he returns to his hometown, connects with his high school best friend (Harold Ramis) and starts looking into his past for answers, while much of the film plays out in flashback, recounting his bittersweet teen years, when everything was ahead of him but his own goals and motivations were elusive. What makes the film watchable is the complexity of the central relationship, as the mature Billy realizes that the most important woman in his life arrived when he was too young to appreciate her.
The movie is quite beautiful to look at with its clean-scrubbed view of small town life and high school sports, and the characters are engaging to follow. This is not a great movie by any means. Like Billy Wyatt himself, this one just misses hitting the major leagues, but it IS enjoyable in a low key way, and the lack of interesting movies on this potentially interesting subject makes it a bit special.a bit misgiving, you really have to watch the movie to get it - Tournesole
It made me realized that I forgot how big the clothes, the hair, the attitude et the abundance was. Mark Harmon is cute but not that deep. It was an odd way of presenting his history with Jodie Foster, because she ment an awfull lot. She was a key person in his life but only appreared at crucial times. Which made her special . The movie glamourized her ways to the point of having her save him from the deep end(pun intended ).Dorky friend. Not a fanatic of baseball either.Really beautiful story - Smiley2
This movie has a really beautiful story. It's really hard to find people with such endearing love for another person. The movie runs on a little but all in all it's not really that bad. Mark Harmon plays the bleeding heart role very well. This was definitely not one of the poorest roles Jodie Foster has ever had, but it certainly wasn't the greatest either. Her rough exterior makes it hard to fall in love with her.
