Subway
Subway is Luc Besson's (Fifth Element, The Professional) ultra cool and stylized romantic caper starring Christopher Lambert (Highlander, Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes) and Isabelle Adjani (Queen Margot, Diabolique).
Lambert plays a hipster thief who falls in love with the bored and beautiful wife of the millionaire he just robbed. She wants her stolen papers back and he wants her heart. With gangsters and Metro police on their tail, the two seek refuge in the wild labyrinth beneath the subway, and team up with the strange characters, including Jean Reno (Mission Impossible, Godzilla), who inhabit this subterranean world. The result is a hilarious, rocking adventure that never slows down.

I generally have no trouble watching films that don't necessarily make a lot of sense, especially if they're captivating enough. I had a few problems with this one though, and this isn't the first time I've seen it either, I just thought maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind and decided to give it another try. As far as I can tell, Fred (Cristophe Lambert) is a safe cracker and a blackmailer and he's hiding out in the Paris subway system where he meets all manner of thieves and misfits. Isabel Adjani plays the woman he is currently blackmailing. The subway police are after him and all his no-good buds. Oh, and he wants to create a "new wave" band. That must be why his hair looks like Billy Idol on a bad day. Beyond that, well, I can't say much because there's not much to say. Oh sure, it's cool to look at sometimes, in the way of a music video or something, but not exactly the stuff of which great movies are made. The police are somewhat amusing, as there are two detectives referred to as "Batman and Robin" and one of them refers to two other cops as "Tom and Jerry", and the chief inspector himself has a rather dry sense of humor. As for the band, when they play at the end they are all wearing safari outfits and look like a nightmare version of the Village People. Lame would probably sum this up just fine, there's plenty of other good movies out there without wasting your time on this one.Only Mystery - XTRUClerk
Subway's a little bit of weird but a little bit of alright. It was Luc Beson's entry into the big time, a film so stylish and different that it broke box office records in France and even crossed the Atlantic to be talked about in Canada. Christophe Lambert, here with bleached hair, is the stylish hero who lives somewhere in the subway, always one step ahead of the law who want him to live somewhere else! The plot is a bit of a quandry, it involves a love story and the forming of a band. Weird. Strangely enough the band does rehearse a beautiful tune entitled "Only Mystery" which is so good you should rent the film just to hear it. A young Jean Reno plays drums so enthusiastically in this band that he knocks his symbals over. An interesting piece of film valuable because it does introduce Luc Beson to the world but also entertaining in its own right. Have a look. Cheers.
