Summer Rental
Carl Reiner (The Jerk) directed this tale of a family man who takes a vacation from sanity when he takes a lease on a Florida Summer Rental. Comedy sensation John Candy plays the stressed-out air traffic controller whose much-needed family holiday yields one hysterical misadventure after another - from settling into his hotel, to settling down on a "party" beach, to settling the score with a nut at sea.
The fun's in the sun, and so's the moral: taking it easy is tougher than landing a 747.

John Candy is at his bumbling, neurotic best in this film about a family vacation that at first comes unexpected then turns from bad to worse. Great supporting performances from Rip Torn as the seafaring pirate/sailor/resteranteur and the late Richard Crenna as the pompous resident who despises vacationers. Personally, this is one of my favourites.Summer rental very funny - Buffy
We love John Candy and this movie reminds us why...Going on a trip with the family? Well this makes sure to remind you how bad it can all go down from a mix up with the summer rental to a big ship race you will fall in love with this feel good movie! It is worth seeing one of john candy's classic moviesVintage John Candy! See The Vacation From Hell! - Zoodles
Okay, mayne not the worst vacation; but it sure started out that way!
John Candy plays a stressed out air traffic controller who is essentially ordered to take a vacation. Things start out well enough and they end up in a nice place. Alas they are actually in the wrong place! Hilarity ensues when they actually get to the run down beach house that they spend their vacation in.
There are some really funny bits in here. There is warmpth too as Candy's character tries to bond with this children and make the vacation worthwhile for them. He goes from being one of countless vacationers who frequent the town in the summer to turning everything upside down and facing off against the town bigshot/bully in a regatta.
The regatta is the climax of the film but frankly it is Candy's performance that I enjoy along the way. If you like John Candy then you should give this film a Zip. If you aren't familiar with John Candy's work then you should give this a try as well along with: Uncle Buck, Stripes, Planes, Trains & Automobiles and many others.
