Sweeney Todd: In Concert
Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Masterpiece...
Stephen Sondheim's Broadway masterpiece, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a musical thriller of romance and revenge set in Victorian England. The work premiered to unanimous critical and audience acclaim in 1979 and went on to win 9 New York Drama Desk Awards and 8 Tony Awards.
In 2000, a staged concert version of the piece was mounted in New York City with a star-studded cast of Broadway's finest and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. That performance has been preserved on compact disc in a brilliant, Grammy-nominated recording.
In July of 2001, the concert edition of SWEENEY was presented at San Francisco's famed Davies Symphony Hall, again with Patti Lupone and George Hearn starring. The world-class San Francisco Symphony, under the direction of Rob Fisher, provided the accompaniment for this powerful, sold-out concert. This magnificent performance has been captured in its entirety on video with stunning clarity and rich multichannel sound.
Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd!

A poor substitute for the 2006 Broadway Production - - RobInOttawa
Having taken in the 2006 Broadway Production in NYC in February, I ordered this thinking I may be able to recapture some of the enjoyment of the new production with this concert-version of the show (as opposed to the fully staged 1985 videorecorded session with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn) - I was sadly disappointed.
I think the songs in this show are meant to be acted - staged, etc - and the concert version - while ok, was not as fun as the fully realized versions - either in the '85 film nor the 2006 production -
I am an enormous Patti LuPone fan and while it's always great to see her perform, I was left wanting more.
If you can't get to NYC, rent this - if you can, take in the show live
My 2 humble cents.
