Swept From The Sea
A haunting tale of love and loss.
Amy Foster, considered a simpleton by some and a witch by others, is accused of conjuring the fierce storm which causes a shipwreck. Only one man survives, and is immediately drawn to strange Amy.

I love this movie!
Vincent Perez is an amazing actor! His eyes are just so moving and conveys emotions that just totally blows me away! Rachel Weisz equally gave a great performance. The story is quite original. Swept from the sea, hope was lost when he was washed ashore in a foreign land. Not knowing anybody, not speaking the language was terrying for Yanko. Amy only wanted to be kind to Yanko, as she was an outcast herself. But love moved them and they had a great love story! My heart cried when Yanko died. This was a real tear jerker! What were they thinking? - cathyottawa
Just what attracted Ian McKellan and Rachel Weisz to this script is beyond me.
This movie is a smaltzy, overly melodramatic bit of fluff aimed at that group of women who love Fabio and Harlequin romance novels. I find it hard to believe that I and the other reviewers saw the same film!
Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good romance - but this wasn't one. There is no build up of their relasionship - they are just suddenly in love, and just as suddenly married.
The movie isn't even really about their love, so much as about the town's unacceptance of them both - him because he's foreign, her because she's "weird".
If you think you're at least going to get a romantic love scene in this movie, think again. Not that it would have mattered, as their lack of chemistry would have rendered it unsexy anyway I'm sure.
And the accents! First of all, the leading man ... yes, accents can be sexy, but a Russian accent? Not so much. Then we have Rachel Weisz who sounds like she's supposed to be Irish, even though she's in England, and finally Kathy Bates, who was miscast here, and struggles to sound like an aristocratic English woman.
Bottom line, the most romantic thing about this movie is the poster. Cheers.More Romantic Than "Romeo and Juliet" - Aquaryan-BC
Of all the romantic films that I have watched over the years, "Swept From the Sea" happens to my favorite. Vincent Perez plays Yanko who is the lone survivor of a sunk Russian ship en route to America. He meets and falls in love with the local outcast, Amy Foster (played by Rachel Weizz). Instead of renting Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", I recommend Joseph Conrad's "Yanko and Amy"-- I mean "Swept From the Sea".
