That Was Then... This Is Now
Emilio Estevez and Craig Sheffer light up the screen in this exciting drama about the delicate balance of teenage friendship. That Was Then... This Is Now tells the story of two boys raised as brothers who take on the challenges of growing up and the challenges of the street with equal determination. They're an inseparable, unstoppable team that' about to face the first barrier they can't knock down... the pressure of manhood.
That Was Then...This Is Now is based on the best-selling novel by S.E. Hinton, author of Tex, The Outsiders and Rumble Fish.

Not really part 2 of The Outsiders - docjay
If you saw The Outsiders, then chances are you may want to see this one too. There's a couple of characters who come over from The Outsiders, but it doesn't really carry over as a second part to a series. Either way, there is a good story of growing up on the other side of the tracks.Painful - ladytonia
Such a good book, such a crappy film. There was so much to work with in this book, and the movie just drops the ball on most of it. If you have not read the book much of the movie will be disjointed scenes. There is very little character development.
The book has themes of love, friendship, poverty, rivalry, drugs, race relations, youth struggling with life. Most of that is not translated to the screen. The acting was OK, I think the main problem was with the screen play. The actors were not given much to work with.
Most of the supporting story lines from the book were dropped in the movie, and those left in did not really tie into anything. The ending was not that powerful, they should have stuck with the book ending instead of trying to improve upon it. The ending in the book is much more powerful.
I can see why this movie has remained relatively unknown. Hopefully one day someone will remake it in the style it deserves.Great, but not as great as the book - Willy1
But S.E. Hinton wrote this brilliant story about the downtown boyz who are always in trouble. The ending freaked me out. It was good.
In the MOVIE, it describes Mark as the main character. Probably Emilio Estevez was popular that he had to be the star. His acting is great. But let's see, Bryon in a fluffy hair? I thought Mark had that style. In the book, after Charlie dies, Bryon is upset and Mark is not. But in the movie it is VERy different. And M&M??!! He is supposed to be so sweet and innocent. The movie describes M&M as a boy who knows EVERYTHING and what's going around the world. He looked like a Senior guy instead of 13-year-old kid. The most unbelievable part is the ENDING. ANOTHER sweet happy silly ending. Mark forgives Bryon and they become friends again. Cathy still sticks up with Bryon. Gosh, give me a break! The movie was disappointing, so you should read a BOOK.
