The Accidental Tourist
Where to find your favorite fast-food hamburger in Paris? How many laundry soap packets does a trip to Atlanta require? Ask Macon Leary, whose guidebooks are revered by home-loving business travelers who loathe being in transit. About matters of the heart, don't ask Macon. He doesn't have a clue. At least, not yet.
This funny, tender film of Anne Tyler's best-seller reteams director Lawrence Kasdan with his Body Heat stars William Hurt and Kathleen Turner as misfiring Macon and wife Sarah, and showcases Geena Davis in her Best Supporting Actress Academy Award-winning role of romantically inclined dog-trainer Muriel. Chosen the year's best movie by the New York Film Critics Circle and a nominee for three Oscars including Best Picture, The Accidental Tourist will leave you glowing.

Most of the reviews posted here give this film a very qualified rating. I've always enjoyed its gentle, slightly quizzical pace, and not having seen it for years (except in a badly edited TV version), it was warm, quirky, and deeply felt. The plot is slight, the wounds of the characters run very deep, and all in all, it's a welcome break from other 'in your face' character dramas. I enjoyed it a great deal, even through two viewings.Well...... - Katisha
I didn't hate this film, but I'm puzzled that the New York Film Critics voted it the best movie of the year. Surely it was a slow year?
I like Hurt and his style, but, man, "underplaying" doesn't really cover it. Under-underplaying, maybe.
Seemed to me his character was not really a suitable guy for either woman, nor was I convinced he felt anything much for either one.

Muriel would be a sideshow attraction in tonnes of movies. In almost any other environment, she'd be too wierd even as the "free spirit" who liberates Stiller or Wilson or whoever from his narrow paradigms of demure femininity. More likely, she'd be the blind date from Venus who telegraphs Ben's or Luke's need to find a normal person who's still fun. A screwball director like Hawks might have used Muriel as the dynamite for a firecracking romantic farce; she's sort of a déclassée version of Katharine Hepburn's pet-loving dingbat in Bringing Up Baby, and given Hawks' trademark interest in the collisions of career and desire, The Accidental Tourist could have been a huge, rollicking hit.
