The Avengers
Saving the world in style.
The AVENGERS, the hip secret-agent series from '60s TV, is reinvented for the movies with a stylish blend of wit, fabulous retro fashions and effects-packed action. Ralph Fiennes is the very dapper John Steed and Uma Thurman is the smartly catsuited Emma Peel, two secret agents who fight crime with style. Sean Connery potrays Sir August De Wynter, an evil genius out to control the world with his high-tech weather machine. This madman poses quite a threat to mankind with his raging icestorms, scorching temperatures and mechanical buzz-bombing bees. But come cold, heat or dreaded plight, our two heroes never lose their cool. Tea anyone?

Obviously not as good as the original series... - Coconut_Willy
...but still, entertaining. I don't think it would have been possible to re-capture the charm of the original in the late '90s anyway, this series being so '60s. I think that they tried so hard to be true to it that it just could not work, at least not without the original cast. The storyline is good enough although a bit on the light side; I certainly believe that a smarter plot could have made this movie much better. To me, the main problem is the cast. The roles and the style of dialogue that they were given just doesn't sound natural for both of them, especially Ralph Fiennes. When the acting seems forced, the results are usually not very good. The rest of the production values though are quite good; nice sets and locations, nice soundtrack and good camera work. The special effects are also quite well done. All in all, this is an entertaining movie but it will surely disappoint fans of the original series.Super cool - XTRUClerk
The Avengers is super cool. It is true to the original series in every weird way. Uma Thurman is every bit as sleek and suductive in her tight suit as Diana Rigg ever was, and who better to play an Avengers villain than good old Sean Connery. Why this movie was ignored at the box office and maligned by critics I don't know. I can only guess the people who saw the movie weren't familiar with the series. Worth a watch, a load of fun, a nice companion piece to the originals.A Tedious Misfire - bUgs1
Perhaps no one could re-capture the unique, surreal, and bizarre ambience of the classic 60s TV series. Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg would be impossible to replace; where they cleverly winked at each other, Fiennes and Thurman appear merely to be smirking self-consciously. This film also lacks a coherent plot and bears all the marks of a hatchet job of editing done during an extreme panic attack. Lots of things get blowed up real good and there are some flashy special effects, but this movie is still pointless and dull.
