The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas documents in rousing song and dance a new Texas Legend, which now joins the Alamo as a historical institution immortalized in story, song, book, play and movie. The demise of the real life Chicken Ranch inspired the musical stage play, and now the big screen version stars Burt Reynolds as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd and Dolly Parton as the Chicken Ranch's proprietress, Miss Mona. The two join together not only in romance, but to fight big city TV crusader Melvin P. Thorpe (Dom Deluise) in his efforts to expose the Chicken Ranch to public scandal, and thus close it down.

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is the kind of movie that my mom would have liked. It's sort of a mix of Smokey and the Bandit, 9 to 5 and a stage musical. It's got Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise who were just nutty together in the Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball movies in the late '70s, early '80s. It's got Dolly Parton playing the same sort of role she played in 9 to 5, but instead of working in a office tower she operates a brothel. And everyone sings and dances to catchy tunes like in just about any light hearted musical you can think of. All the elements that someone's mom would probably look for in a movie right? Well, maybe not.
First of all I'm not sure mom would have considered watching this movie based on it's title. And if she did get past the title, well then there's all those swear words, and the women dancing around in their underwear and the occasional boob flash. It's too bad, cause it's a decent movie.
I'm not an action movie type of guy, but neither do I like musicals. However, I really did enjoy this movie. I liked the actors and the characters they played and I actually liked the music and I got into the dance routines.
You know how you get a song stuck in your head and you just can't get it out? Well, ever since watching this movie I keep hearing.....

Also amusing was Charles Durnings Singin' Dancin' Governor of Texas. His "dance the sidestep" number performed in the collidors of the actual Texas state legisture was very entertaining.
I see alot of movies and as a result have seen most of the "popular" movie musicals put out since the early 1960's. In terms of gaining and holding my interest, Whorehouse moves straight up to number 2 on my list of favorite musical movies. Right after "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg".

it is worth looking at this movie if you like musicals. Dolly is gorgeous in all her aparels and burt is as sexy as ever. This movie is restricted but there is nothing too sex rated in it you just see alot of covered breasts and alot of negliges. Burt shows his chest and is in boxer shorts the story is very good and you will probably have a little tear there at the end but it will pass since Burt saves the day...A happy ending. This is an odd movie. It isnt every day you get to see singing and dancing prostitutes led by the one and only Dolly. Still, it is great fun. Apparently based on a real bordello, Best little whorehouse tells the tale of Miss Mona, the bordello's Madame and her lover, sherriff Ed earl (Reynolds). rounding out the cast is Dom Deluise as a snoopy reporter and Jim Nabors as a simple minded deputy. With memorable songs such as "NOthing DIrty Going On" and "Sneaking around" you will be singing along. However, Burt Reynolds should have left the singing to Dolly.
