The Best Years Of Our Lives
"Heartwarming [and] Priceless. A Masterpiece." -Boxoffice
It's the hope that sustains the spirit of every GI: the dream of the day when he will finally return home. For three WWII veterans, the day has arrived. But for each man, the dream is about to become a nightmare. Captain Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) is returning to a loveless marriage; Sergeant Al Stephenson (Fredric March) is a stranger to a family that's grown up without him; and young sailor Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) is tormented by the loss of his hands. Can these three men find the courage to rebuild their world? Or are the best years of their lives a thing of the past?
Featuring a brilliant cast that includes Myrna Loy and Virginia Mayo, this postwar classic garnered seven Oscars, including Best Picture. Heart-wrenching, touching and "filled with emotional dynamite" (The Hollywood Reporter), it remains "one of the best films about war veterans ever made" (American Movie Classics Magazine).

Greatest Post-war Film! - Grounded
This Best Picture winner from 1946 is the best post-war film that I have ever seen. It follows 3 veterans who have returned home from WW2, and the difficulties that they faced upon their return. The actor who played Homer, a real vet himself, deservedly won Best Supporting Actor and an Honorary award for his performance - the only time a single performance has won two Oscars.
This is a heartwarming film that really holds up well today. It's also surprisingly well paced and entertaining given the subject matter. This classic is well worth a look.Fabulous Movie - Kissfan
This Film won the Best Picture in 1946. Now I was not around in 1946 to see the competition but this movie is a heart wrenching heart warming rendition of a time gone by.
Picture a more innocent USA with thousands of returning GI's coming home from WWII with all their scars and baggage.
The MOVIE was surely highly topical at the time and given it's popularity , it may have actually helped a part of the population understand the difficulties of the returning men.
Absolutely great acting with some subtle but effective lighter moments. The Older GI is the best drunk since Foster Brooks.
This is what movies are ment to be....
Zip it ZIPSTERS and enjoy.

This is one of the best movies I have seen in months. I kept thinking how thought provoking it would have been (and still is) for its time. The movie follows the lives of 3 World War 2 veterans upon their return from battle.
The are all in very different social circles, however they end up making a very strong bond. It is a very touching movie, with a great ending.
One really interesting note is that Homer, who is "handicaped" in the film (he has two claws to replace his hands) actually lost his limbs in the war.
