Experience the peril and intensity of free-diving, the world's most dangerous sport, in The Big Blue. Jacques (Jean-Marc Barr, Breaking The Waves) and his friendly rival Enzo (Jean Reno, The Professional) are considered masters of free-diving and have made a career out of this one-of-a-kind competition. Jacques' life-long obsession with diving comes from his unusual bond with the sea, while Enzo thrives on the challenges of its inherent danger. In his travels, Jacques meets Johanna (Rosanna Arquette, Pulp Fiction), who is attracted to his innocent qualities and follows him across Europe to share his adventures, triumphs and ultimately tragic bond with Enzo. With breathtaking underwater photography and matching musical support from Eric Serra (The Fifth Element), The Big Blue immerses you in a life and death adventure you'll never forget.

This film is unusual, in lots of really good ways. There is great character development, beautiful scenery, and an interesting plot that hasn't been told a thousand times.
The characters aren't stereotypes that you know already when they first open their mouths. It centres around free-diving, which is a sport that not many are really familiar with. It was filmed in the 80's, but other than the occasional "big hair style", the 80's aren't really in your face for the whole film.
The plot, the characters, and the production are enough to make me enjoy and recommend this film to others.
I agree with other reviewers, though, the ending (I won't spoil it for you) seemed hollow and empty. I was looking for more, especially after such a long movie.Love it - Qwinyrose
This film is beautiful. The landscape, characters, cinematography are amazing. I felt a part of the characters, belonging in their friendship as a third party to their closeness. The part played by Rosanna A. wasn't her best and her character angered me as a viewer. The Big Deal - tigermom
This movie has everything. It has a beautiful love story, breathtaking pictures of the sea, a gripping drama of friendship and jealousy, and it is very funny and very sad - like life. All of this somehow comes together into a very well told story revolving around the main characters eventually fatal fascination with the depth of the ocean. You will always remember the people from this movie for their quirky independence.
Besides, and although it does not advertise it, it just happens to be the last word in men and women and why being in love is just so hard...
Watch the full length version! The American cut sucks in comparison.
