Its hard not to be fascinated by a film that kills off one of its main, and assumed stable characters in such an unexpected manner. You keep thinking that what is about to happen would never happen, that such an occurrence couldn’t befall a character, not in such a way.But then it does.In another one of its rare eerie scenes, the car quietly surprises James Brolin in his garage.Another scene has a couple of cops use their 2 police cruisers to block the car from passing through, and quite unsuccessfully. It isnt so much that the car never grants the cops the chance to slow it down that I admired, but the process in which the car vetoes their plan, gets back to business almost as if brushing them off.The Car was filmed in the beautiful Utah desert, and begins moderately intense with the deaths of 2 bike riders.
Things take a dive quick into cheese dip with the hammy overacting & terrible script. Kathleen Lloyd plays widowed James Brolins girlfriend, who is a teacher at the school of his 2 daughters & is anxious for their approval. Brolin plays a cop in the small town, used to dealing with no more than traffic tickets, who's stunned that someone is running over the citizens of his little community.
No one is safe in this film, and its because the actors are given such poor, embarrassing dialogue that the characters are impossible to take seriously. Even the car itself isn’t always believable, mostly due to the boring way it is filmed and for the painfully obvious sped-up car footage during major chase scenes. Its this cheap effect that helps sink the film incredibly. There is also a kinda creepy touch at the end that I won’t give away, although every review or mention of the film does so dont look it up.The Car works best as a good bad movie,so if thats not what you’re looking for, you’ll most likely be disappointed, unless you love horror & road movies or are determined to check out every last one of them, or it was your favorite movie when you were 10.a great suspense thriller - moviebuffs
this movie i remember watching as a young kid. I still love this movie. Not as scary as it was back in the day but still has enough to grab you and keep you on the edge of your seat. If you havent seen this movie yet and you like suspense then its a defintite rental for you. The car horn still freaks me out. this car reminds me of the new chrysler 300. i think thats why i like the 300 look so much.... it looks meanBeeb beep, beep beep... No - Squish
The film opens on a lonely stretch of desert highway, the heat waves coming off the ground shrouding a spec of black off in the distance. Then, slowly, in an opening identical to High Plains Drifter, The Car makes its appearance. And would you believe it, this most impressive vehicle was designed by George Barris, the very same man who designed the original television series' Batmobile. Throughout the film, there are frequent panoramic shots of the desert and on a technical level, there are many innovative shots, some genuine moments of high suspense, and if that doesn't float your boat, there's always Evil Car-O-Vision - and though nothing more than a red filter over the lens, well you know the driver is bad ass when you see red!
The Car is the kind of film that could have earned cult status had it only had a story worthy of... average intellect. In a scene revealing the nature of The Car and its driver we find The Car outside of a cemetery, having followed the school marching band it was chasing (how perfect is that?) into it. The Car cannot enter as the place is hallowed ground. Rather than making the obvious leap of logic to "Hey Luke, the evil driverless car can't come into blessed areas! Clearly that means it's unholy!", the story waffles when the local law enforcement spend three scenes discussing its mystery and how to stop it.
Still, somehow, in all that time, never does anyone suggest or discover the Car's reason or backstory. What that means is The Car is nothing more than a mechanical Jaws, driving around outside of the warmer Hell waters it's accustomed to swimming around in because it's pissy and hungry.
Add to this the lack of blood and gore in this smash-em up road-fest and you may find this film is moer worthy of being watched to mock with friends.
