The Changeling
"A Superior Haunted House Thriller" -Variety
Here is an award-winning feature that boldly mixes a frightful ghost story with a great suspense plot and keeps you guessing all the way.
George C. Scott and Trish Van Devere star in a thriller that challenges the viewer to solve its mystery. It's a haunted-house adventure complete with séances, nocturnal grave-diggings, ghostly spirits, and an ancient puzzle jealously guarded by a devious man (Academy Award winner Melvyn Douglas). Scott is splendid as the man who becomes an unwilling instrument of a ghost's revenge and learns to trust no one. Eerily entwining a detective story with the mystery of the supernatural, The Changeling delivers solid entertainment and a frightening good time.

After watching this movie, for the longest time did not want to go into our basement because we had a wheelchair down there. If I was up before six I would lay in bed with the covers over my head until it was past 6:00 am. A very good movie - more chilling - not to gory. A definite own movieA REAL ghost story - danielam
I saw this in the theatre when I was about 13, and the recommended age for admission was 15. I should have waited, because after I saw this, I had to sleep with the light on for a week. It's a truly frightening ghost story, where all the scariest things are found in your own head! Nothing is presented to you in the form of blood, gore or the like. I have to say that even though I own this on DVD, I absolutely treasure the experience of seeing it in a packed theatre. They audience made the experience unforgettable. I remember screaming and crying simply because of the shared terror we were all feeling together. I'm afraid that watching it at home on DVD is not the same, but I challenge you to watch it with a large group and make the setting as sombre as you can...Much better than I remembered - ITScienceFreak
I originally saw this movie in theaters as a teenager and went with a friend. We two giggly girls managed to take all the chills out of the movie with inane jokes.
However, watching it again now had a completely different effect. Although I had a hard time putting George C. Scott in the role of a sensitive artsy type, the story was much creepier than I remembered. Interesting how a simple rubber ball can end up scaring the bejeepers out of you...
I highly recommend this movie, especially if you're the type that doesn't like slasher flicks, but prefers good old fashioned suspense. If you like when a director lets your imagination run a little wild, this is a great movie.
