Another 1960s Brando gem - HJS33
When Bubber Reeves (Robert Redford) escapes from prison and returns to a small town in Texas, hidden frictions in the social fabric break wide open. Sheriff Calder (Brando) tries to save Reeves from lynching amid spiralling violence that is motivated by prejudice and racial hatred. Film critic Pauline Kael has argued that the Chase is a typical “hate-the white-South movie… It’s as if Kennedy was killed because Texas is all heat and guns and violence.” It is certainly among the most obviously political movies Brando made in the 1960s; but most of all it really captures the mood of the mid 1960s (at least how Penn and Brando perceived these times).
