This is a pretty good French murder mystery which stars Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel, who are very recognizable to North American audiences. It was very enjoyable, almost on the level of Se7en. That is, until the climax. That was not only completely unrewarding after everything the movie built up to, but the final scene was just ridiculously over the top, something you'd expect to see in Vin Diesel's XXX. That drops the movie a whole point for me.French gone Hollywood or Bollywood! - Mano
What can I say? The way it started, I thought this is going to be French version of Se7en. Grizzly murder scenes, sedate cop, serial killer with a message....well...not so fast! Then it turns out to be a movie set in the spectacular Alps and the photography is truly breath taking. We suddenly get the taste of an action flick! Nicely choreographed fight scenes! Finally we get an avalanche which makes you think of so many Hollywood movies!
I call this a potpourri movie. Bit of everything for everybody.
Almost Bollywood...no songs here though!
I must say though, unlike other reviewer, I did like this movie. In my lingo this is a "time pass" movie.
I like Reno and he always delivers goods. He seems to do better in Hollywood movies or am I just imagining?
I give this a B+bit of a mess - story1
This film is all over the place. It starts out as being an interesting police procedural, investigating strange goings-on in a small Alpine village with suggestions of links to other similar crimes - serial killer stuff. Although off-putting, the strong torture visuals would have been ok if the film knew where it was going and could put it all in context. Then we get, about 2/3 of the way through, the cop-buddy routine. By the time it all comes to its 'climactic' resolution you're left wondering why you wasted your time.
