The Deep End
"Finally, A Thriller That Actually Thrills." -Esquire
Still waters run deadly in this gripping suspense thriller about the extraordinary depths to which seemingly ordinary people will sink in the name of love.
Tilda Swinton "is magnificent" (The New York Times) as housewife Margaret Hall, a fiercely protective mother caught in a vortex of deception when it appears that her son may be guilty of murder. One desperate act leads to another, and soon she's being blackmailed by the mysterious Alek Spera (E.R.'s Goran Visnjic). But what begins as a riveting cat-and-mouse game between them soon evolves into a haunting romance.
Immersed in the tradition of Hitchcock's best twists and turns, The Deep End "holds its suspense to the very last drop." (The Toronto Star)

Swindon Does It Again - Goodie
As a die-hard Swindon fan it is hard to say anything bad about her films - and of this film there is really nothing bad to say. A remake of a 1940's noir film based on a story published in a women's magazine, this film is beautifully acted, filmed among the gorgeous scenery of Lake Tahoe and has a moving and fascinating score. All this and a clever storyline, what more can anyone need!
Tilda Swinton's work is usally found in of-centre films that defy the usual Hollywood conventions - which is probably why she is perhaps the most under-appreciated actress around. Here she is a possessive mother raising her children alone while her military husband is off playing with his big toys. She clings to her oldest son - probably fearing he will go the way of her absent husband - and provokes a fight between him and his seedy lover which results in the accidental death of said lover. When she assumes her son has murdered him the twists begin. I hate plot spoiler reviews of thrillers, so I will just say that the irony of the ending is that although misintepretation causes the problems in the film, in the end mother and son can only go on by allowing each other to continue their misintepretation of each others actions.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant film.the 2 flaws of american thrillers - Christo
It's frustrating to see how many american thrillers and dramas are dependent for their story progression on the fact that the protagonists don't exchange the most basic information. Are people really that incapable of talking in real life? The other thing in these movies is that the protagonist makes very stupid mistakes that most of us with any common sense would not make. Like the ridiculous way in which the protagonist disposes of the body in this film! The end feels like a bit of a cop-out as well. Still, the good acting by Swinton saves the film from being a full dud.Swinton is memorable - eoguy
There have already been a lot of reviews on this movie but I don't recall anyone mentioning that this is SO MUCH a film about what happens when families don't communicate. Everything that happens is a result of family members not sharing, asking, talking. This seems to be quite indicative of our modern society where family members are all going in different directions and not sharing old-fashioned family meals with "real conversation." The only person the mother shares her true feelings and situation with is Goran and it changes their relationship! Maybe it's not a thriller but a sad reflection of our society! I really liked this fiim and got a lot out of it.
