The Deer Hunter
This powerful motion picture tracks a group of steelworker pals from a Pennsylvania blast furnace to the cool hunting grounds of the Alleghenies to the lethal cauldron of Vietnam. Robert DeNiro gives an outstanding performance as Michael, the natural leader of the group. THE DEER HUNTER is a searing drama of friendship and courage, and what happens to these qualities under hardship; it is a shattering emotional experience you will never forget.

Classic - but must see? - Barn
This is a movie that probably every film buff should see, but I'm not certain is has stood the test of time all that well. It felt very long, and didn't resonate all that much with me.
Interesting to see Walken and Streep at the beginning of their careers. I read that the Russian roulette scene in the hunting cabin was done with a live round in the gun (although the actor got to check the chamber chamber).War and America - Benson
This was a great movie. Some people may complain that it was slow and drawn out, but I think it needed the extra time to show how the character's lived in small town america. It also makes the movie seem more realistic, almost like it was shot documentary style.
The acting is superb, with Bob De Niro playing a very strong quiet type, who is the man that everyone looks up to in his small Pensylvania town.
There are plenty of great scenes here but the suspense involved in the russian roulette will leave you on the edge of your seat. This movie stays in your head for a long time. The True Impact Of War - FilmJunkie
This film is atypical, it is very long, but it is also very rewarding. If you are a fan of 70's experimental film then you will love this, if you get bored easily, don't even bother.
This film is about those who return from war, what impact it has on those they left behind and what the reprecussions of a futile war are in modern society.
Great work from Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep, as well as the brilliant John Cazale make this film resonate, despite the long and oddly situated plotline.
An experience not for the faint of heart.
