The Devil's Brigade
"One of the finest war films ever made!" -Hollywood Citizen-News
They were misfits, rebels... and heroes. Oscar winners William Holden and Cliff Robertson topline this riveting World War II saga based on the true story of the First Special Service Force. Capturing the drama of combat with "outstanding" cinematography and an "exceptionally strong cast" (The Hollywood Reporter), The Devil's Brigade is a thrilling tribute to this renowned fighting unit.
Lt. Col. Robert T. Frederick (Holden) takes on the daunting task of melding a renegade group of American and Canadian recruits into a crack team of commando warriors. Frederick's superiors doubt the rookies until Frederick's volunteers them for a perilous attack on a Nazi stronghold in the mountains. His men will be outnumbered and outgunned, but that's a fair fight to "The Devil's Brigade."

A very entertaining war movie. Unfortunately most people did not seem to understand that that was what this film was meant to be - entertaining and not a historical intended vehichle. William Holden along with Dale Robertson and Edwards do a respectable job with a great supporting cast.Decent movie, historically innacurate - DisposableHero
This is one of those typical classic rah rah military films from the 60s. The problem was, the acting was shit, the action sequences were weak and it was horrifically inaccurate. It follows the bad-ass joint Canadian/American commando unit, 1st Special Service Force, from WW2. In this depiction, the Canadians were the elite, while the Americans were all criminal soldiers, who come together, clash, then work it out and fight. Just wasn't very well done. If I was a veteran of this unit, I would be offended, especially if I was American because they were made out to be bad soldiers. I would love to see a historically accurate remake, possibly a miniseries of their exploits (Hanksburg, I think you should be thinking about this one next).Reminiscent of The Dirty Dozen... - bartonfink
... but with a little less style.
This film, like the other reviewer said, is your typical war film, with more than half of it devoted to the formation of the unit and its training. The one thing that makes it stand out is the Canadians vs. the Americans rivalry.
The source material is interesting enough, and it has a decent script, but the visual treatment and the direction come off as particularly stock making this unmemorable amongst the glut of WWII films from the 50s and 60s.
