The Doctor
He was a doctor who thought he knew it all, until he became a patient.
Reunited for the first time since their Academy Award nominated hit Children of a Lesser God, screen favorite William Hurt and director Randa Haines team up for another successful collaboration in The Doctor. Now, the talented Oscar winning Hurt (1985, Best Actor - Kiss of the Spider Woman) joins Christine Lahti (Running on Empty), Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) and Elizabeth Perkins (Big) in the hit release that's been hailed as one of the must-see films of the year. It's the uplifting story of a man who becomes an extraordinary surgeon, as well as an extraordinary person, once he experiences firsthand what it's like being an ordinary patient. Touching hearts of critics and audiences alike, The Doctor promises to entertain and inspire you from beginning to end.

I thought this movie was well done. Simple without a lot of extra words to express and convey the emotional difficulty the main character had to go through in his journey. He really did well protraying the struggle of someone with a battle with cancer and realizing he was a difficult man to like as he became the patient. He really played his part well with his acting ability.MovieAddict09 is MovieAddict#zilch - jack1
This film is a superbly cohesive and emotionally charged adaptation of a real-life story. The stars - William Hurt and Elizabeth Perkins - center the story beautifully. They are the star-crossed lovers who truly move us. They may yearn to be sexually united but must content themselves with a growing empathy that ultimately transcends sex.
When June (Perkins) dies as her stage four cancer dictates, Jack (Hurt) carries his empathy back to his work as a doctor, where previously he and his partners had engaged in a surgery practice that was all skill and no heart, and begins the special work of imparting that empathy to his dumbsrtuck residents.
And yes, he brings love back to his marriage, which had begun to fall apart many years earlier. I know for a fact that I am not giving away too much. It's the experiencing of the film itself that counts. I had seen the the film before. After my second viewing, I sent away to purchase the DVD.Overall a True Disappointment - MovieAddict09
After hearing amazing things about this movie I was excited to finally get a chance to see it. However, right from the beginning I was disappointed. The story line and characters were not well developed, and different events occurring within the movie could have been left out entirely because they lacked cohesion with the main story line. I found that the story lagged in the middle of the movie and in turn it took over the ending. Instead of seeing the Jack (William Hurt) transform into a better doctor, the movie just ends and does not really address this transformation (other than hinting at it slightly), it almost seems like they ran out of time. It is unfortunate that this movie didn’t turn out better.
