The End
"A wild descent into absurdity - a barrage of hilarity!" -L.A. Herald-Examiner
A "wickedly funny" (Cue) comedy about the value of life and death, this "hysterical" (Variety) slapstick farce will leave you dying from laughter! Burt Reynolds (Boogie Nights) gets help ending it all from an all-star cast featuring Dom DeLuise, Sally Field, Joanne Woodward, Myrna Loy, Carl Reiner and Kristy McNichol.
Sonny (Reynolds) is a freewheeling bachelor who will do anything to avoid physical pain! So when he suddenly is diagnosed with a fatal -- and painful -- disease, he guzzles down a bottle of sleeping pills in an effort to end it all! But his plan not only fails, it lands Sonny in the loony bin beside a demented schizophrenic named Marlon (DeLuise) who is more than eager to help him fulfill his mission! And as each outrageous attempt backfires in a more hysterical way than the last, Sonny realizes that life -- no matter how brief -- is definitely worth living. But tell that to Marlon, who's hell-bent on seeing Sonny's suicide plans -- through to The End!

THE END - Elliott1
The N. American lack of enthusiasm for this film tells us less about the film than about our culture's discomfort with death. In fact, The End was critically well received in Europe while it bombed in the US and Canada. A great pity, because it is consistently amusing, and contains some of the most hilarious comic vignettes in postwar films - the juvenile priest, the self-absorbed doctor, the ditzy girlfriend, and the hero negotiating and renegotiating with G-d for mercy.Guilty Pleasure - Radio_Jane
I feel almost guilty admitting that I loved this movie. It was such a goofy show that it made Jerry Lewis look like high art. Burt Reynolds discovers that he is dying and tries to end it a little early, the result of which is he gets locked up in a mental institute. You guessed it, that's where Dom Deluise comes in. The ensuing insanity is really funny. Fields is there solely for window dressing, and the ending descends into marx brothers like insanity, but the show was relatively well written, and is one of those guilty pleasures you are bound to enjoy.
